Who We Are

WHO WE ARE

The National Society of Real Estate Appraisers, Inc. (NSREA), was organized in the state of California in 1956 as an affiliate of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers, Inc. and was amended in 1958. Our organization has members, most of which are licensed real estate practitioners, in the majority of the larger cities in the U.S.. Many have obtained advanced college or university training and are well known as appraisers in their communities.

Because our membership has worked and lived primarily in urban areas, we are recognized as especially knowledgeable regarding the values of properties in and around such areas. This fact increased the possibility that we would be called upon to aid in the development of activities for improvement in urban areas.

Emphasis on objectivity and the need for intensive study in appraising is a cornerstone of our training programs. Our re-certification program is based on continuing education and peer review. We are required to complete the re-certification program so that our skills are kept up to date. In addition, our standards of ethics and technical competency are among the highest in the industry. We have a working and meaningful relationship with other professional appraisal organizations, creating an atmosphere for the exchange of ideas and procedures.

Our symbols identify appraisers who will render fair and complete valuations, giving full consideration to all factors and circumstances. An appraiser certified by NSREA truly merits your full confidence.

Today, the organization is committed to its founding principles by:

  1. Exchange ideas and to advance the profession of real property valuation through education and experience
  2. Encourage each member to preserve and increased their competency as an appraiser
  3. Providing opportunities for members to preserve and increase their competence as an appraiser
  4. Ensure that all requirements of the organization comply with the Appraisal Subcommittee, Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practices and applicable federal and state laws

Brian Cox — National Society of Realestate Appraisers

Dear NSREA

The historic institution of the National Society of Real Estate Appraisers established in 1956 is uniquely positioned in the appraisal industry to seize an opportunity to implement substantive change in the appraisal profession. In addition, we currently possess the business and education infrastructure to cultivate a new generation of minority appraisers that will continue the mission of the institution of NSREA well into the future.

The systemic frailties of the appraisal profession have been acknowledged and documented by statistical research and analysis provided by governmental as well as independent industry studies. Appraisal Bias is an issue that has economic implications on the generational wealth of minorities at all spectrums of the socioeconomic scale. In addition, the disproportionate minority participation in the appraisal profession is estimated at 3% of a total population of approximately 70,000 appraisers and valuation professionals.

Based on the awareness of the potential social injustices created by longstanding systemic flaws, and the barriers to entry into the profession created by the current appraisal supervisory experience model, appraisal industry regulators, and wellestablished appraisal trade organizations have embraced the idea of alternative pathways into the appraisal profession.

Timing is everything. I believe the ambition and enthusiasm reflected in NSREA’s newly elected Board Members, combined with the experience provided by the established membership is a perfect culmination of success in the making.

This administration shall engage the partnership with HBCU’s, High School Student Programs, and the Military to expose and advance the appraisal profession by the development of a NSREA branded education and practical experience licensing model.

The appraisal product we provide to the world is the quality of appraiser we produce through our Partnerships with the various HBCU’s, High Schools, and Military, etc. It’s all about the people. Therefore, we must cultivate, nourish, and protect our brand and the people we serve. The impact we make on our people will be the impact we make on the world. We are only limited by our imagination.

Respectfully Yours,

Brian C. Cox NSREA, President
